-Set in 1919, young couple Tommy Beresford and Tuppence Cowley form a
partnership, hiring themselves out as ”young adventurers”. Their first case,
however, is more of an adventure than they expect – working to find documents
that, if they were known to the general public, would fuel a communist
revolution in Britain.
Appointment with Death DownloadA tyrannical old
martinet, a mental sadist and the incarnation of evil. These were only
three of the character descriptions levelled at Mrs. Boynton, the
matriarch who kept her family totally dependent on her. But did she
really deserve to die on the excursion to beautiful Petra?
A Pocket Full of Rye Download
When upper middle class businessman Rex Fortescue dies after drinking
his morning tea, the police are called in to investigate. The cause of
death is eventually confirmed as poisoning by taxine, an alkaloid poison
obtained from the leaves or berries of the yew tree
[in reality, the "berries" or arils are considered non-toxic as they
don't contain taxine. However, the seeds inside contain a high
concentration of taxine and are poisonous if chewed].
Elephants Can Remember Download
The bodies of General Alistair Ravenscroft and his wife were found near
their manor house in Overcliffe. Both had bullet wounds, and a revolver
with only their fingerprints left between them. In the original
investigation no one was able to prove whether the case was a double
suicide or murder/suicide and, if the latter, who killed whom. Left
behind are the couple's two children, including daughter Celia.
Death on the Nile Download
While dining out in London one evening, Hercule Poirot
sees a young woman, Jacqueline de Bellefort ("Jackie"), dining and
dancing with her fiancé, Simon Doyle. He also notices that Jackie is
passionately in love with Simon, perhaps too much. Jackie's father was a
French Count, the Count de Bellefort, and her mother was American. Her
father had an affair and ultimately ran away with his mistress. Her
mother lost all her money in the Wall Street Crash, leaving Jackie
penniless. The next day, Jacqueline takes Simon to meet her best friend,
wealthy heiress Linnet Ridgeway, in the hopes that Linnet will offer
Simon a job. Three months later, Simon has broken off his engagement to
Jacqueline and has married Linnet instead.
Big Four Download
Captain Hastings visits Poirot only to find that he is leaving for South
America, having been offered a huge amount of money by the American
'soap king' millionaire Abe Ryland. Poirot inquires if Hastings has ever
heard the phrase "the Big Four". Hastings responds uncooperatively. At
the eleventh hour an unexpected visitor called Mayerling comes in,
saying only, "M. Hercule Poirot, 14 Farraway Street." When he is given a
piece of paper by a doctor he writes the number 4 many times.
Hickory Dickory Death Download
An outbreak of apparent kleptomania
at a student hostel is not normally the sort of crime that arouses
Hercule Poirot's interest. But when he sees the bizarre list of stolen
and vandalised items – including a stethoscope, some lightbulbs, some old flannel trousers, a box of chocolates, a slashed rucksack, some boracic powder
and a diamond ring later found in a bowl of a soup – he congratulates
the warden, Mrs Hubbard, on a 'unique and beautiful problem'. It is
nevertheless not long before the crime of theft is the least of Poirot's
concerns.
The Murder of Roger Ackroyd Download
The story begins with the death of Mrs. Ferrars, a wealthy widow who is
rumoured to have murdered her husband. Her death is initially believed
to be an accident until Roger Ackroyd, a widower who had been expected
to marry Mrs. Ferrars, reveals that she admitted to killing her husband
and then committed suicide. Shortly after this he is found murdered. The
suspects include Mrs. Cecil Ackroyd, Roger's neurotic, hypochondriac
sister-in-law who has accumulated personal debts through extravagant
spending; her daughter Flora; Major Blunt, a big-game hunter;
Geoffrey Raymond, Ackroyd's personal secretary; Ralph Paton, Ackroyd's
stepson and another person with heavy debts; Parker, a snooping butler;
and Ursula Bourne, a parlourmaid with an uncertain history who resigned
her post the afternoon of the murder.
Murder on the Orient Express Download
Upon arriving at the Tokatlian Hotel in Istanbul, private detective Hercule Poirot
receives a telegram prompting him to cancel his arrangements and return
to London. He instructs the concierge to book a first-class compartment
on the Orient Express
leaving that night. After boarding, Poirot is approached by Mr.
Ratchett, a malevolent American he initially saw at the Tokatlian.
Ratchett believes his life is being threatened and attempts to hire
Poirot but, due to his distaste, Poirot refuses. "I do not like your
face, M. Ratchett," he says.
Partners in Crime Download
The Beresfords' old friend, Mr Carter (who works for an unnamed
government intelligence agency), arrives bearing a proposition for the
adventurous duo. They are to take over 'The International Detective
Agency', a recently cleaned-out spy stronghold, and pose as the owners
so as to intercept any enemy messages coming through. But in the
meantime Tommy and Tuppence are to do with the detective agency as they
please – an opportunity that delights the young couple. They employ the
hapless but well-meaning Albert, a young man also introduced in
The Secret Adversary, as their assistant at the agency.
Sleeping Murder Download
"Let sleeping murder lie": this is the proverb (a variation on "Let sleeping dogs lie")
which is not obeyed by twenty-one-year-old New Zealander Gwenda Reed
(née Halliday), who has recently married and now comes to England to
settle down there. She believes that her father took her directly from
India to New Zealand when she was a two-year-old girl and that she has
never been in England before. She travels to England by sea, from New
Zealand aboard the S.S.
Dominion. While her husband Giles is
still abroad on business, she drives around the countryside looking for a
suitable house. She finds an old house in the small seaside resort of Dillmouth in Devon, which instantly appeals to her, and she buys it.
Body in the Library Download
The story starts at Gossington Hall with Mrs Dolly Bantry waking up from
a pleasant dream, and noticing that the maid has not been in yet.
Suddenly, the maid, Mary, dashes in, tearful and breathless, and informs
Mrs Bantry that there is a body in the library, before running out
again. Colonel Arthur Bantry goes downstairs and learns from his butler,
Lorrimer, that there is indeed a body in the library. He calls Constable William Palk and Mrs Bantry calls her friend, Miss Marple (revealing that the victim has been strangled).
