Opera Browsers: Still Kicking with Performance

I have always used Opera browsers in my phone, tablet, and laptop for more than eight years now. The browsers still not failed to give me the satisfaction that I need when it comes to performance and data usage.

On Opera Mini
As you can read from this blog, I use Opera Mini to have free and budget-friendly data usage of internet on my Nokia C3-01 and N73. Since I am always on tight budget and can only afford the MB data plans of the Philippine's telco's Smart and Globe, Opera Mini have let me see more websites in a limited amount of data use because of its webpage compression ability.

When the Opera browser for Windows updated to version 10, I stopped using it and had not updated the browser until the version 12. I stopped because the homepage loading started to slow down two notches than the older ones. And today, as I was checking my laptop for updatable softwares, I saw Opera and updated it. The homepage loading caught my attention and I can say that it had regained its fast rendering title. The browser still has the speed dial page but it pages can now be stacked in just a single folder/group so you can have more speed dial pages in view. It's like the the category folders in your Android homescreen. It's more organized! It has kept its accelerate option and can speed up page loading in slow network. Now, it has "Discover" button which can let the user read top-quality news and entertainment around the world. And also it has the "Stash" feature which organizes your favorites and saved pages into a simple or sophisticated list.

Comodo IceDragon: A Faster Version of Firefox

I was having problem with Comodo Dragon, a chromium browser, because its flashplayer is not functioning properly so I decided to uninstall-and-reinstall it. As I was browsing through comodo.com, Comodo Dragon official website, I saw this Comodo IceDragon tagged as The Faster and Safer Version of Firefox. I got curious so, I downloaded this new browser HERE.

I can say that it speaks to it's tag. It's faster really and since it's a Comodo product, it's secured! The default appearance has a pint of Comodo Dragon but the functions were developed in a Firefox core browser but suited to privacy and security as well as social media functionality. You got to feel that webpages are loading smoothly and faster because this browser offers easy usage and minimizes PC resources. And of course, it is compatible with Firefox plug-ins. Try the IceDragon and confirm that my words are not pure sales talk!

E-books and e-zines now are not limited to pdf, jar and mobi formats. Epub formats are becoming widely used ever since the existence of android and smartphones, Kindle and iPad.

What is epub format?
From en.wikipedia.org, it is short for electronic publication; alternatively capitalized as ePub, ePUB, EPub, or epub, with "EPUB" preferred by the vendor which is a free and open e-book standard with .epub as extension. This format has flexibility of resizing fonts, bookmarking pages and selecting your own reading layout.

How to Download Videos Hosted from a Site (i.e.Youtube, Dailymotion, etc.)?

You're getting tired of Youtube's buffering because you are in slow connection, or you want to save the movie in your drive for future use? You don't want to download torrents for the new movies, or your video is hosted at some site and it doesn't have the download option, then read through this post.

Before, I use online applications to do this, like vixy.net, catchvideo.net and savevid.com. But the time to convert the video URL into a downloadable link is adding time to your internet browsing. And sometimes when you are at a computer shop, there will be instances that the computer doesn't support java because the java plug-in is not installed on the browser. If you download the java and install it, it will take about 15-30 minutes depending on the internet speed. Within half an hour, you still haven't started your video download.

I suggest that you install a program for more convenient downloading (even if you are at the internet shop, they sometimes have Deep Freeze, so it's not a bother). I heard about a program called Youtube downloader, but I would not suggest it since sometimes it doesn't work and it fetch slow. My picks are these:

Browsers in the Time of Slow Connection

As I have mentioned in the previous post, I have experienced the 2G internet signal of Globe Network on which I was able to bear for more than a month. During those slow connection days, I have installed quite a few browsers to compensate the slow loading of pages. To name those few, I had (and still have with my laptop) Avant Browser, Maxthon, Flock and Comodo Dragon in addition to my existing Firefox, Chrome and Opera browsers. I have read first a couple of reviews of these browsers before finally convincing myself to install these new ones.

So, which one will I recommend to those who are in the same shoes as mine before? It's definitely the Avant Browser! Why?

Opera Turbo Faster Speed for Low-End Connections

If you use your cellphone as modem or you have a dial-up connection, then you are one of those people who tired up waiting for a site to load completely. The Opera Lab is now perfecting Opera Turbo to ease out that tiresome scenario. Opera Turbo provides a faster browsing experience through your limited-bandwidth connection by compressing network traffic.

This is also a big saver for those who are in per KB charge because it lowers the KB received in their network.

Websites will load in the same text and layout, flash contents are supported but images will be served in lower resolution due to the compression delivered by Turbo. Images are still fine so you can still enjoy some works from flicker, myopera and deviantart.

If you have 100MB speed connection, Turbo will most likely not give you an enhanced Turbo browsing (you are already having a blast, I think it's the maximum connection).

To sum it up: CP Modem or Dial-up + Opera Turbo = Speed Up Browsing at Lower Cost

How to Protect Your Computer from Virus-Carrying USBs?

My laptop used to be called the "Laptop ng Bayan" because I always lend it to those who are in need. (Naks! Philanthropist.) It was always passed around and a number of USBs were plugged into it. So, you can expect that after the rounds, viruses will be thriving in its system. That's when I started to acquire some skills in solving virus problems. I did manual deletion from the registry, tried different antiviruses and practiced techniques to prevent the virus from spreading. But then I discovered the Deep Freeze, USB Disk Security and USB Firewall. I had already posted how the Deep Freeze functions.

The USB Disk Security and USB Firewall are applications that detects viruses from a USB/Flashdrive once it is plugged into the computer. It will alert the user on the existence of the suspicious files contained in the USB and will offer the option to stop and delete them. It works as good as antivirus but it cannot protect the whole computer system from malicious programs, only the removable drives.

The USB Disk Security monitors in real time, can examine the USB drive thoroughly, can repair the registry and cleanup your drive, and it can show the list of startup programs. The downside of using this is it does not go through the subfolders on which viruses can also hide. You have to do the USBScan for thorough scanning.

The USB Firewall can clean your disk drives and remove the autorun.inf file in them. Though it only says detection of autorun.inf files, it also detects other malicious programs once they attempt to launch.

Download USB Firewall. The file is freeware, no need to register.

I have the two applications running in my laptop along with Kaspersky. The virus attacks lessened because I was able to detect some of them before it enters my laptop.

How to Restore Your Computer Settings after Removing a Virus?

Even the Ravmon virus is now a history, the Ravmon Removal tool is still a handy one.

If you were able to clear out the virus in your computer system, the after effects of the virus is still there. Your computer will not automatically restore to its previous state.

The after effects of most viruses are:
1. My Computer Drives Context Menu Problems
2. Folder Option has been missing from Tool Menu in My Computer
3. Folder Options "Show Hidden Files and Folders"& "Hide protected Operating system files" will not be working.
4. Task Manager, Registry Editor, Command Prompt ,RUN and Folder Options are disabled

You can use this tool to restore all of the above problems. It also gives you an option to disable AutoPlay on All drives which can prevent any virus-carrying USB drive to infect your system. You can also use the Ravmon Removal tool to delete the hidden autorun.inf file (the file utilizes the spread of virus in computer) in your hard drives and plugged USB. It's free!

How to use it:
1. Run the application.
2. If you want to use the tool to remove the autorun.inf file in your hard drives and flashdrives, click both the "Remove Virus from Hard Drive" and "Remove Virus from USB Drive" buttons.
3. If you want to remove the after effects of previous virus in your system, click the "Restore Windows Default Settings" button. Tick the actions you want (I suggest you tick them all) and click the Apply button.
4. You will be asked to restart your computer. Click OK.
5. After restart, your computer settings will be restored.

Notes: There is a small chance that your restore actions will be successful if the virus is still running in your system.
Compatible with Windows 2000 and XP.
I think it will be better if you will disable the "Hide protected operating system files" in the Folder Options to monitor any unnecessary hidden files in your drives.

Recommended Free Audio/Video Players and Converters

The list of the best players and converters on the net is growing tremendously. When I say the best, these are the software which have everything you need (well, if not, MOST of the things that you need). With every software companies developing new products and updating their old ones, you might have a hard time choosing what you need. Or if not you, might just settle yourself with the pre-installed Windows Media Player in your computer.

I listed down some of the best players and converters that I had used already. Honestly, I frequently try new players to bring up some change in my laptop. I also download new themes and skins just to have fresh new look for it. Even if I don't download movies on the net, I also included some of the online converters out there.

K-Lite Codec Player
This is a collection of codecs, directshow filters and tools. Codecs and DirectShow filters are needed for encoding and playing audio and video formats. K-Lite Codec Player doesn't need so much memory from your computer. It has the classic Windows Media Player look. It may be not good looking but it can play everything! I can load MP4, 3GP, FFDShow, MPEG, AVI and rmv formats.

AlShow
AlShow is the very customizable player I had tried. You can move and resize captions to fit your screen and even change the font, rotate the screen and most of all, I can capture video and audio segments. Works only on Windows 98/ME/NT/2000/XP/2003. Needs 20 MB space, 128mb RAM.

VLC media player
It is both a player and streaming server. It means you can watch video from your DVDs or use this player to watch online videos. VLC is lightweight and also classic looking. It caters Windows, Mac OS and Linux OS.

I only listed one since it has everything. No need to look for more. My friend gave it to me when we hosted a concert in our dorm.

VCM doesn't mean it only converts video files. The link provided is a folder on which it include the .exe to run the file. Just copy the folder on your local drive C:/Programs/. Then create shortcut on desktop using the "orange counterclockwise arrow" icon (vcm). If you want to uninstall it, just erase the folder and off you go. To convert, just indicate the source file and select the folder where you want to output it. Hit the format you want the file to be converted and wait.

It converts all files to video formats (AVI, MP4, MPEG, MOV, WMV, RM, SWF) and audio files(ASF, VOD, AAC, MP2, MP3, AMR and WMA).

If you don't want to stream online and prefer to watch it at your leisure hours, you can first download the file. You only need the URL of it's location.

Vixy.net
The site lets you convert Flash videos/FLV files (youtube, myspace, etc.) to MPEG4 (AVI/MOV/MP4/MP3/3GP) files. You doesn't need to have an account to use this. Just enter the url of your videos and indicate what format you want it to output and download it after conversion.

Convertdirect.com

The service converts FLV files to AV/WMV/MP4/MOV/.MPG/3GP/MP3/AAC. The files are suitable for iPod, Zune, PSP, mobile phones and others. When you only want to download the original FLV file, e-mail ad input is not necessary. But when you need to convert the file, you have to provide them your e-ad because the download code will be sent there. This is kind of tedious.

How to Freeze Your Computer to be Resistant to Viruses?

Do you know that there's a software that even if you load up your computer with viruses and you messed up with its system, it will still run on the state before you messed it up when you restart it? I tell you, how this done.
It is by making your computer system in freeze state. It means that you freeze the core of your computer in a good state, no viruses and running in good mode. So, even if viruses attack the system of your computer it will be resistant to that and will restore back to the state it had been before it was attack after restart. An antivirus will be unnecessary.

Just a reminder, this is a powerful software. I tried to install it and I had a hard time removing it. So, install it at your own risk. The trick to uninstall it is to make your computer date in the future (after the expected expiration date). The uninstall button which was not present in the Add/Remove Programs before will now appear.

The downside is:
1. you have to use USB to store your files. You can also partition your hard drive into two (C and D). Then you only freeze the C drive in which the operating system files are stored. Then the D drive will the only one vulnerable to viruses. And this also where you store the files you have made since if you store it in C, it will be time to say bye-bye to them once you restart. Because as I have said it restores back to its previous state.
2. Every time you have to install new softwares, you have to unlock it and it requires a restart which will be a tiring process as for me since my laptop is kind of sluggy.
