Lenovo S100 is not an Eye Candy

Just got a new netbook!

My new baby is the blazing red Lenovo S100 with 2GB DDR3 RAM and 500 GB harddrive that runs in Intel® Atom N570 Dual-Core processor. More to it, it only costs P14,000 with preinstalled Windows 7 Starter. Its 10.1" LED display is enough for the eyes to create documents and spreadsheets and browse the net. Its 6-cell Li-Ion battery can run up to 5 hours of usual usage (browsing and typing).

It's handy especially when I am at my workplace in the rural area. I can surf the net using my Nokia C3-01 as modem through its bluetooth connection, no need for a cable connector and a heavy laptop (sweet!). I can also use it in Wifi zone area. It has an SD Card reader which you can use to easily transfer pics from your cam or phones. The keyboard will suit even the users with big fingers. The package comes with a silicon keyboard protector that matches the color of the netbook (mine is a red one).

The downside is, it has issues in video playback. You cannot rely on it to play all types of videos. The speakers are not so decent (means the sound is not audible even if the volume is in half) , you may need external speakers to enhance the sounds. Also, the Windows 7 Starter has limited functions, like changing desktop background and cannot utilize the desktop slideshow. The aero theme is not installed. But you can upgrade your OS up to Windows 7 Ultimate.
This new netbook revived my blogging activities so watch out for upcoming posts!

Smart Always On

Smart offers a new "sulit" internet browsing rate. In it's "Always On" plan, it gives internet users a consumable per Volume Data Package. This means that you pay your connection based on your bandwidth use. It's cheaper compared to their unlimited surfing, with at least P20.00 you can enjoy a day surfing the net at 25 MB data package. Also, if you're using Opera Mini on your phone, with only P20.00, it works as if you are in unlimited browsing (with the restriction of downloading big files, of course). Webpage sizes ranges from 20-100kb. So, with the 25 MB data, you can visit as much as many pages you like. I've been using this package ever since. But when you prefer to download files from the net, enroll in Unlisurf.

This is available in Smart Buddy, Smart Broadband and Talk'n Text subscribers. When you have consumed your package, standard data charges applies, that is P10/30mins.

2. Click File>Save As..>Choose the path of your USB drive>Name the file as Desktop.ini and hit save.
3. Having the Background: Choose a picture from your computer files (must be a JPEG format). Copy-Paste it to the root of your Flashdrive (look at the red mark at the bottom right-side). Rename the pic as "wallpaper".
4. To change the font colors, Open the Desktop.ini you created before and edit the number in this line in the above code (any number as long as it is 5-10 digits):
IconArea_Text="55500"

5. Press Ctrl-S and exit notepad. Refresh your Flashdrive window and you will see the change.
If you do not want to have a background, then skip the background picture part.

Note: You can also do this in any windows (i.e. My Documents, My Pictures, My Music). Just follow the instructions above.

Credits to my friend.

How to Uninstall Linux (Dual Boot with XP)?

I had tried Ubuntu and Kubuntu on my ACER laptop with 256 MB RAM (dual boot with Windows). The cover says that the minimum requirement is 256 MB RAM but as I had observed, the speed is not optimized. People are suggesting that I should better install an Xubuntu, the lighter version of Ubuntu which can ran in a 128 MB RAM. So, how was I able to uninstall these distros under the Windows environment? The steps will only take about a minute or two.

What you need:
1.Your Windows XP Bootable CD.

Procedure:
Deleting the partition.
1. Run your computer in Windows mode.
2. Right-Click My Computer, Press G. You will be taken to the Computer Management.
3. Click Disk Management (found at the left-side list). Choose the partition you alloted for your Linux OS. Right-Click and choose Format.
4. Put your Windows CD on the optical drive and Restart Windows. Boot through the CD.

Deleting the GRUB Boot Loader.
1. When the Windows installation appear, choose Repair. A command prompt will appear then press 1 when it asks for the installation number, Enter.
2. If you do not have a password just press Enter; if you have, enter your Adminstrative password.
3. Enter "fixmbr" (without the quotations) and you're done. Exit and Restart (remember to remove the CD). The GRUB Loader will no longer appear during startup.
